DIY advice -- my DIY valve cover gasket is leaking

My new replacement VCG is leaking (I think)

I am getting burning oil smell and smoke coming from the rear left of the VCG (looking in from the front of the car)

Any advice / tests I can do before I remove the VCG and reseat the gasket (more sealant?)

Thanks

3.0? do not use any sealant except in the front at the joints by the Vanos.

3.0, I didn't use sealant the 1st time around. Are you sure about no sealant at the rear?

Any way to test if the VCG is leaking before I pull off the cover?

Did you change the bolt seals as well? if not I'd change those out and see if that helps. No sealant on the gasket needed except at at the seam near the front, and only a dab on that location.

there is no such a way to test VCG leak. just clean the old grease and then trace the leak in the next couple days.

Bolt seals are the grommets, right (rubber/plastic rings at the bolt points)?

Yes I changed those out
