2001 X5 4.4 Jerking or Shaking when in Reverse Any Ideas?
Last week a weird problem started happening, when I put the car in reverse and press on the gas the car starts shaking and jerking for a couple seconds then it goes away. If I am up on a hill and just put the car in neutral and roll in revesre it does not jerk. Also if I press the gas very gently in reverse it seems to be ok. Any ideas on what this could be?. |

It is unfortunately the tranny. That is how mine started about 5k miles ago...
the jerking/shaking will go away eventually and it will be replaced by 'slipping' it will rev a bit higher before it moves... Now once you get there, changing the tranny fluid should make a hell of a difference, mine did...changed my tranny fluid since I had to swap engine...but it made a big diff. for me good luck to you

Before you say it is a bad tranny, check if it is throwing codes. It can be vaccum leak. Check and change the fluid also.

no codes,
only happens in reverse, all other gears seem to be great.. Stupid questions where do I check the level of tranny fluid? |

Also any clue on how much replacing the fluid would cost at the stealership?

There is no level check far as i know, BMW calls it liftimeoil. The price in Norway is about 800 dollars to replace oil and a small filter innside.
