Fuel consumption auto vs manual

Hi Dear manual X5 gear box Users,
Can anybody state what is your diesel's fuel consumption. I've got atomatic 6 gear diesel and in average it's about 30mpg (if long distance on motorways then 34mpg with cruise control at speed of about 75mph). It means it's about 12-13 Litres/100km. I've read some post on another forum, where some lady wrote that her manual diesel does 6-8 litres/100km depending on city/motorway.
Is there really so much difference in fuel consumption just because of the gearbox difference. Of course atomatic does use more fuel, but is it really so much different?

05 3.0L Diesel, 6 speed manual. Long term average from the computer 8.2L/100km. This is mostly city driving with the occasional country trip.
A country trip involving altitudes to 1400 metres and computer says 7.4L/100km. Dead flat driving 6.9L/100km or less. All these figures improve slightly if driving with the aircon' turned off.

My diesel consumption reads 12.8 liters/100 kms average city driving. Is this normal. I drive an 02 E53 X5 3.0d.

Well, if it's atomatic then it is absolutly normal as mine does more/less the same. If it's a manual then rather it seems a bit too much, especially compared to what Fatboyoz's car achieves. perhaps you are a very agressive driver?

Thanks Colin,
this means that indeed it does make great difference having a manual gear box. Well, it's always nice to know you drive a huge fast car and it takes as much fuel as eg Renault megane

Rob,
There is definitely a difference between a manual gearbox and an automatic. Surprises me that they no longer offer a man' option on the X5. I also believe that driving style goes a long way in determining fuel economy. I am quite sedate around town, but enjoy the huge torque when country driving, especially passing at speed. Not being an automatic driver, I would imagine it would be all too easy to put your foot down, a lot of the time, to enjoy the acceleration the low down torque provides when taking off from traffic lights etc.

Hey, Colin!
I have this tiptronic option in the gearbox- you just shift the knob to the left and it turn into manual/sport mode. The only thing is that this bloody thing still changes gears depending on speed even if you set them manually, eg you choose gear 4 and as you slow down coming to the lights at about 10-15mph it'll force reduction to gear 2 so it's still rather automatic. i'm enjoying my car though and shall keep it for a few more yars (it's 2005 made so should go another 2-3 years at least without causing probs), but the next one i buy will probably be manual.
