fuel pump

thanx guys,

actually got my mech to take out the pump today with the intention o changin it and we noticed the filter in the pump was sludged up, as in real dirty.

so we took it off and washed it, let it dry and put it back, re-coupled the pump and started and the whine was gone!

the whine was prolly from the pump using more force to suck fuel thru the sludged filter. 'probably'... the x is still under observation though so i'll keep u posted.

wasnt so lucky with the chirpin sound tho, actually took out the belt and when i spun the alternators wheel head i heard the sound again so its probably the bearings in the alternator.

still tryin to get my hand on a diagnostic machine, will let u know when i do.

That is normal. When you first turn the key on the cluster turns on all the lights as a check. And with key on engine off the check engine, oil pressure and battery charge lights all stay on untill the engine is started. Nothing to wory about there.

Clogged filter hah.. Maybe i should check my filter as well... Do i need to take the pump out to access the filter..?

no. that's just a screen to filter out large debris so it won't kill the pump. there's a seperate fuel filter AFTER the pump. you do NOT have to remove the fuel pump to change it.

I guess the OP does not have access to a fuel station that has filtered pumps.

I got a bit confused here...

Which filter was slugged up..?

Was it the fuel filter or the grid in the fuel pump..?

And did you have to take the pump out to get to it.??

Im having the same whining sound and would like to sort it out..


BTW. when standing under the car, the whining sound seemes to come from just about right under the right side rear passanger seat.

aight sorry bout the confusion. wat im refering to is actually called the strainer and its situated at the lower area of the fuel pump. view diagram;



its completely different from the fuel filter and is located under the right rear passenger seat. you definitly have to remove the pump to get to the strainer. there are some instructions on its removal here

check and see if you have any fuel in the tank, ifyoure running very low ,put atleast 3gals. of fuel in the tank and that will take care of the issue.i had the same symptoms that you have mention, misfire in #1and#4 cylinder feels like its going to stall.ive checked all the components and it checked out fine.ie fuel pump relay, injectors,fuel pressure regulator etc.
