Looks like we have a pretty unanimous conclusion....Alternator.

My red battery comes on when i turn the car on, as soon as i start driving it goes out, this means the alternator is on its way out?

Could be... It may be weak charging at idle at first, or have diode trio/voltage regulator problems...?

How long does the light stay on if you let it sit at idle?

When the light came on while driving that was indicating a loss of charging output... so now you know you can drive for 20 minutes on just the battery

But I'd put the battery on a nice long trickle charge to get it back up to proper charge level now, so it will be ready by the time you get the alternator.

Yeh, can you confirm that is is a 120amp in a 01 3.0i?

Should i look at getting a used/remanufactured one? I don't want to put a non oem one in.

Yeah, it should be the 120 amp in the 3.0i.

And the ones you get from the dealer are remanufactured to OEM specs, just beware of cheap quality rebuilds as opposed to remanufacured. And If not OEM (which I know will be expensive) at least find a reputable brand/company for it.

4.4i has a water cooled alternator, and it would be too much of a bitch as a DIY. I would bring it to the dealer, or an indy that has done them before. I wouldn't let a mechanic do it that hasn't done a BMW water cooled alternator before.
