Up-date:

I took the plugs out from the right-side cylinders and found everyone of then dipped in oil which I think the head gasket is OK. If it was faulty then the oil should be in one of the chamber not in others. It could possibly be Crank Case Breather Valve in the intake manifold causing the high oil pressure which has damage the oil separator therefore the oil is getting sucked into the chamber along with the air. Results cloud of smoke from exhaust.

Have ordered new Crank Case Breather Unit and also Oil Separator. Will wait till these parts arrive. For the fan, will have till I sort this smoke problem first.

In the meantime if you have any other suggestion, please let me know... Thanks again to everyone...

If the oil is on the outer part of the plug, at the porcelain... the valve cover gasket is likely the culprit and could also be causing the misfires. But if it is on the firing pin on the cylinder side, then I think you're on the right path!

Hi weasel56,

Does 'valve cover gasket' means 'Profile Gasket'??. The engine light on the dash did not appear and there wasn't any noticeable misfiring.

Here's one of the plugs that I took out today... have a look and see...

Hoorrraaayyyyy!!!!!

I finally fixed the problem... FINALLYYY!!!! Fixed it on Wednesday, took it to work so it would have a good run. And the smoke is finally gone.

I had to change the Vent Hoses which connect to the Oil Separator and the Crankcase Breather Housing. Replaced Crankcase Breather Housing, Oil Separator. There was some 'gunck' inside the Oil Separator which caused a blockage and as a result the diaphram in the Crankcase stayed open permanently. Therefore it was letting oil into the chamber.

It did take a long time to do the job. In order to do this, I had to remove the Bulk-head cover which has micro filter in it. Then used T30 torx key to remove the 7 torx screws on the back of the in-let manifold. Removed all the hoses connected to it and replaced it with new ones in reverse. It took hours and lots of patients. Very small space and you have to kneel forward without damaging any electrical connectors. According to Bentley Manual Book, it guides you to remove complete in-let manifold but I managed to do it without having to do that. Times and Patients are the key.....

As for the Aux fan, I had to remove my Angel Eye connection from the parking light wiring and surprisingly the fan is working like normal. From my experience, for the 2001 model out there, if you're thinking of doing a DIY Angel Eye, DO NOT connect it to the side light power harness because it interferes with ECM. Symptoms are No Aux Fan, Power Drainage detection on ECM as a result you'll have Gearbox going into Fail Safe Mode and lots of other electrical system malfunction ie, Dash, Sat Nav and Steering Angle Sensor. I'll be re-connecting my Angel Eye Ring via power source from either Cigarette Lighter Port or Aux Power Port in the boot with additional ON/OFF switch.

Thanks again to everyone...

Good luck! Hopefully these turn out to be simple problems!

Hi,

Do you know which models/engines have an 'oil separater'? Do I have one on the '01 X5 that I just bought?

TIA

Terminology, terminology.....

....after my last post, (and because I never heard of an 'oil separater', I called a BMW dealer for a price check of an 'oil separater' for a '01 X5 3.0. The guy (under 40?) didn't have a clue and couldn't find the part, so I thought, "Cool, maybe my engine doesn't have one - one less component to have to replace and shell out $$$ for!"
......NOT!
Not being too comforatble with the initial BMW tech's confusion, I called another BMW dealership and low and behold, I finally learned that an 'oil separator' is nothing but a glorified PCV valve (or Crankcase ventilation Valve) as its referred to around here!!! But unlike 'around here' where PCV valves are basically a dime a dozen, the (glorified) one for a BMW 3.0i is $144 plus $28 for an additional hose (not including tax!)!
......Being a BMW newbie that was a former (3-time) Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. DIY'er owner since '93, all I can say is, "...Toto, I've got a feelin' we aren't in Kansas anymore!"

The difference between the BMW oil separator/ crankcase vent valve/ cyclone valve, whatever you want to call it... and a regular PCV valve is that a regular pcv valve simple vents positive crankcase pressure into the intake system. The BMW one condenses the oil from the crankcase vapors and drains it back into the oil pan, sending the cleaner air to the intake system. Thus reducing oil consumption.
