X5 vs the Touareg/Cayenne

Help me decide,

I am trying to decide between the Touareg/Cayenne vs the BMW both are slightly pre-owned 05-06 models in the v6 in the 30-35K range.

What I like about the BMW is that it weighs less Tourareg and gets about 1-5 mphs better gas mileage on average.

What I like about the Cayenne, is that its a newer design came out in 03-04 years and plus its a porsche. I like SUVs in general.

In terms of handling both are good, the slight edge is probably the porsche.

In terms of looks, both looks good.

In terms of interior, the Touareg looks the most expensive.

Any opinions, suggestions, add-ons?

The toureg looks disgusting...On every level..Its easily the worst looking out of the 3 and I'm willing to bet its the worst on performance out of the 3...

My sugesstion is to go for X.
Not because i have one, because.

1. Touareg is TOO HEAVY, sure interior looks nice, but it's overcrowded, with all the buttons to push. I drove 5 cilinder diesel that drove like a cow, and then i drove 4.2 liter touareg with a facelift that was WAY TOO HEAVY STILL
2. Porsche is very nice in my opinion, drove 4.5 liter cayenne S, IMPRESSIVE BUT ITS NOT AS REFINED AS X. Fuel economy is not as good either, inside i would say is very nice, even nicer then X, but in my opinion X handles better, i drive 4.8is i believe it tops the porsche unless u want gts or cayenne turbo S.
3. As i sayd above, i would go for X because, interior is very saddle, everything is at the right place, handling is superior to touareg and even the 4.5 liter porsche, in my X i dont feel at all that i'am in an SUV, compere to touarege which is sitting very high just like porsche.

From what I've heard the VW is a cheaper version of the Cayenne, shares the platform and modified versions of engines. But the reliability issue is huge with the VW. Don't know much about the Cayenne except that the V6 isn't going to be much of a performance vehicle.

Go with the X5. You will love it.

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
The Touareg/Cayenne is heavy and the V8 eats gas big time.

The BMW 05-06 4.4 would be my first pick followed by the 3.0.

I owned/leased 05 4.4 X5 and liked it, I now have a 535XIT which I like even more.

YouTube has a video from Germany where they test the GTS Cayenne and 4.8 X5 side by side. They are well matched. The edge went to the X for handling. (my German is Ok, but not perfect)

I agree with the posters above. The Cayenne doesn't have the fit and finish and the ride is not as refined. The Turbo will out pace any X easily but I recall reading the handling was not a focus for the Turbo.

It's your car. The only way to decide is a test drive that includes an on ramp or two and a couple highway curves.

I hate it. My dad has the V10 diesel. It is so uncomfortable. It does have a good reverse camera though. And the steering is so loose compared to the X. I'd be making U-turns in the X with the same movement in the touareg needed to just turn.

In my expericence having owned a 05 E53, I tried out both cayenne and toureg before own the E53 in 05,

Cayenne:pros seemed very sturdy, handling was great and interior materials seems very durable/rugged, and back then as a SUV it was bigger and more capable offroad. Cons for me was $$, some interior panels could have been quiter over major bumps, and powersteering seems too much point and shoot making steering very easy(i like a little feedback/resistance from steering wheel)

Toureg: pros, very simliar to porsche (thats a good thing) you get much more features/ gizmos, you also have simliar capablities as cayenne. Cons, interior although very nice still has a VW feel to it (whereas some materials seemed like they were pulled from a jetta or something, and this truck cost much more $$$

ended up going for the X5 because I found the interior (construction) to be the best, the price was in between, gas mileage is average-better, ride was the quietest, and handling was great, and BMW age very well inside/out
(oh and it did and I beleive still does have one of the highest resale values in the industry/catergory)
