4.4i 2000 - What are the symptoms of a the idle control valve not working properly?

Usually you will get a code and an SES light. Idle control valves stick, either open or closed. Closed would result in difficulty or refusal to idle (not enough air getting to engine at idle). Open would probably idle high and suck more gas, but only at idle. It might smell rich.
