Some reasons to get an extended warranty....

Just FYI - I purchased my 2003 X5 a while ago, used. I was not eligible for the BMW extended warranty, and my local dealership was offering the Daimler / Chrysler warranty. I purchased the D/C warranty for $2200, with a $100 deductible, which lasts until 85,000 miles.

Since the original BMW warranty expired, I have had over $7000 worth of work done on the X, thankfully covered by the extended warranty.

So here's an interesting story:
I had Inspection II done 1 month ago for $650. The tech recommended changing the belts, flushing the coolant and the brake lines, and some other minor details which cost another $600. I specifically requested, that since the Inspection II was supposed to be so involved and thorough, that the tech check the engine for any other wear, or items that need attention. The tech said everything looked great and ran great.

1 month goes by, and I get a Service Engine Soon light. Here is a list of items repaired/replaced due to a SES light, and a steering wheel shimmy when braking above 65 mph:

Oil Return Hoses
Crankcase Vent Hoses
Gaskets to repair leaking Valley Pan
Rubber Seals for leaking Valve Covers
Fuel Tank Breather
And a bunch of parts replaced in order to try and stop the shimmy when braking above 65 mph, including bearings, control arms, and rubber fittings...

I just think it's interesting that so many problems can occur after an Inspection. I'm not faulting anyone, I know these engines are more complicated than ever - I guess the X just does not like these Chicago winters at all.

Got my '06 cpo 15 months ago, i called dealer yesterday asking for ext warranty quote and they said it $1695 for addtional 2 yrs/100,000 mile from BMW. Is that a good price ?
I'm debating whether to buy or get rid of the x after 4 yrs warranty runs out.

This is not a reason to get an extended warranty..
This is a great reason to find a better shop because your SUCK!!

For Switchman, you answered your own question. Why get additional warranty if you're set on selling when factory runs out. I bought the additional for my peace of mind, although BMWs have great engines, we really never know. Your quote is about the average price for the extra 2 yrs

I'm not set on selling it, that depends on whether the x gives me problems or not. i've read quite a few major problems with the x thru this site. My 530i and a previous 328 ran like a charm with no major issues, sold the 328 at 88k miles and the 530i is now my wife's daily driver. So, the inline-six has proven to be a very good workhorse, not sure about the v8's.
