Hydraulic lifter failure! WHAT to do? Try?

Hi all.

I had my car diagnosed today. I something is wrong with the hydraulic lifters. But instead of paying a lot of money to change them all, big job and very expensive. Is there anything I can try to make it work? Any kind of cleaning? Something I can add to the oil to clean everything out? Will a oil change and filter change help ? Also someone suggested to run M oil .. a thicker oil for M cars... that could help ? Is this true?

Anyone with a positive experience? Anyone tried it? Had lifter/tappet noise/failure..

If a lifter is collapsed and won't hold prime there isn't really much you can do to get them back up... You could get by with only changing the ones that are collapsed, but at that point why not just change them all?

Yes, I see.. I just dont understand how the lifter can colapse why its in a shop. The car was at a shop getting the tranny dropped. When I got the car back after some tranny fixes it had developed that sound! While standing still at a lift?

BMW said they would need to invesigate even further but they are pretty sure its a lifter problem (tappet).

You can see a video I made earlier:

YouTube - BMW ///330Ci Cabrio engine noise AFTER being at workshop!

Would it be more likely it is colapsed? OR something else? The car did miss a little over a liter oil when I got it and checked.

SO are you also saying it could not help atall to flush oil with thinner / cleaner and change oil filter and oil ?

The oil being one liter low isn't enough to cause any problems like this, and starting it while on a lift isn't either...

Flushing it out with thinner oil would only work if it is a sludge caused problem, but if that isn't the cause it wouldn't really do anything. I guess all you can hope for is for BMW to goodwill the problem. They may offer partial goodwill paying for parts but charging labor, but with that many miles they might not...

If BMW doesn't offer any help with the problem I'd do a good oil flush and try switching over to some full synthetic 10w30 or BMW's 15w40 oil... worth a try I guess.

Well I used some engine/lifter cleaner you pour into the oil to clean out... And changed oilfilter, valvecover gasket, checked sparkplug for being loose and filled it with ///M Racing oil - a Castrol 10W60. That dident help... But luckily the shop who are gonna change all the lifters would also do oil change and they just re-use my oil change here so you canīt say the money is wasted, it will only get cheaper at the shop.

10W-60 is the wrong oil. When they drain it they should throw it away and put the correct oil in.

Yeah, that motorsport oil is a bit thick for your engine...
