so is it just me or does anyone else absolutely hate their 4.8 trans....

i mean it f---kin totally sucks !!

my 4.6 trans was lite years ahead !!

lemme explain for those that dont have a 4.8 , your at a light it turns green you go and by 40 mph the trans is already in 4-5 gear !
then you wanna go faster so you hit the gas and it downshifts all the way to 2nd and throws you all over the place !! other times it'll climb to 4k rpm's and just stay there for like 30 sec's won't shift, it'll wait for you to go till redline then when it does shift it again throws the truck in gear !! i really feel that no matter what speed, what gear, what mode this pos is always in the wrong gear !!

ive been to the dealer 2x's and all they do is reset the adaption

i ordered dinan parts last week (intake-throttle body-software) i called dinan and asked if they could write me a new software for the trans like they had for my 4.6 and the guy i spoke said sure no prob , then when my dealer called to send him my tcu #'s which they requested, another guy who sits next to the other guy was like pay no attn to him he's smoking crack it can't be done !!

so do all 4.8's act like this , cause i mean it really takes all the fun outta driving this truck with 340 something horses , the only time you really feel it is when your full throttle other wise for the most part i feel like im driving my wife's 3.0.a real let done to say the least !

sorry but it really kills me as to what this is all about , and is it every 4.8 they ever sold !! does anyone know of a fix or do you just deal with it ?

NEIL

Mine doesn't do this. I can easily modulate the shift points by throttle position. It has a pretty big range from 5%-10% throttle up through 50% for normal driving. Above 50% it's generally all the way for me .

What happens if you leave it in sport mode? Don't you get to higher gears later?

Not sure what the 4.6 shift points did but I'm pretty happy with my trans with the exception that from time to time on 50% throttle positon shifts it can be a bit uneven, it's harsh from 2-3. Not always but sometimes.

Hi Neil,

First, sorry to hear about your frustrations. It certainly seems your enjoyment has been greatly diminished.

I have, at times, experienced what you've touched upon. However, it hasn't bothered me as much (probably cause it's not my daily driver).

EDIT: No harshness though and no throwing me all over the place when shifting. My experience has not been as bad as yours.

I can verify that the tranny in normal mode does shift kinda too quick at times. Then kinda bogs and then downshift, if it's not accelerating fast enough for me. I guess it's trying to save gas but defeating the purpose, and enjoyment, by shifiting a little too quick. People will probably say to re-set and drive it more aggresive to learn your driving style. I have so little experience with the car, and never tried this, that I don't know if this actually works.

I do prefer Sport mode but then I have experienced the high rev being held and not shifting at what I would consider to be the proper shift point or taking too long to shift. It's been suggested to me that this should only happen when the tranny is cold - but I'm pretty sure it's happened when the car has been on the road awhile. Also, this behavior does seem to lessen if I get on the gas more. Trying to baby it in sport mode SOMETIMES only exascerbates the condition.

That's the crux for me ... in Sport mode ... it doesn't happen all the time.

As far as manumatic mode - I don't usually use this mode. If I had paddles I probably would use this mode more.

I haven't experienced any harshness so far in any gears ... maybe I haven't driven the car aggressive enough. I'm assuming that is when it's happening for you. If not ... then I'll have to pay more attention and see if that happens to our car.

sorry to hear your problems, mine is fine, i'am actually really happy with my trans, it does exactly what i want, i guess your complaint is about the fact, that if you dont play with high rpm's it changes gears too quickly, BMW dealer tolled me, it does it, to save up gas, and to put less strain on engine, i guess u dont like that.

Yes, it happens with aggressive driving. I've read on a thread someplace here in X5world that others have experienced that too from time to time. My only gripe (I posted on this before) is the 1-2 shift being slow and feeling like it hangs when at WOT shifts. Seems like there is a huge amount of time - others have commented that is normal.

Not sure if you're talking to the TC or Li-X5 but if that was for Li-X5 (which I assume since you quoted him) ...

I think he's saying he doesn't experience any problems but that he prefers the sport mode because the aggressive shift pattern matches his aggressive driving style. I think you might have confused his frustration comment to mean he was referring to his tranny versus the slow traffic.

Of course, I could be totally off-base here ...

1) Does the harsh shifting happen in normal, sport or manumatic mode?

2) I haven't used WOT enough to notice this. I'll be curious to see if this happens to our car.

I love the X and, as I mentioned, have experienced some things that I don't know if they are probs or normal for the car. However, in no way am I so unhappy with the car as the TC - far from it. I love the X!

I might be wrong, but i understood his concern, as he did not like his tranny in general, saying it shifted to soon, and went up to gears 4-5 too soon, without hight rpm's, i was just saying that 4.8is really does this if you go slow with rpm's and dont push the car.
