Oil Seperator DIY Link
So I replaced my OS before the snow flew and this is the diy I followed, got it from E46 fanatics...Have been a lot of OS threads/questions lately...hope this helps others...
The "Cold Package" OS is the same with exception that the OS is wrapped/covered in an insulating foam...since I live in Seattle I installed the standard replacement. If I lived where it was really cold I would have installed the "cold" version....took 3 hours r and r. j

Thewifexx5- thank you for the posting/ My 2003 3.0L is at the dealer now for repairs related to a blown oil separator. BMW should recall this part before someone dies on the highway when their beloved X5's engine stalls due to locking of the engine. The service manager will be tested on Monday. I'm very frustrated with this situation. Temp was -15F in WI, drove 9 miles to work, left at 5pm, engine whined a bit a beginning, got on highway, saw nothing but white smoke behind me and the engine stalled. Fortunately my family was not in the car at the time. I made it to the right with a stroke of luck and there she sat until the flatbed arrived. Dealer told me $2500 so far. I hope they pay for parts and discount the labor. I plan to speak with BMW NA about this on Monday. BMW is placing us at risk for their engineering mistake. They need to fix this part for good.
