Check/Replace tail gate light bulb

Calle me stupid, I try to check the tail gate brake light bulb(like others keep saying check barke & rear light on my dash panel). The Manual said unclip the panel with screwdriver but didn't say where. I tried but all I did was manage to pry 4 clips at the front side but there is insulation inside and won't come out all the way. Am I not prying the right place? TIA

Can you be more specific? Is it a tail light, brake light, or tail gate bulb you need to get to?

I want to check those bulbs inside the swing out tailgate not those in the body frame.

Thought I should clear it up some more. It's the brake light inside the swing out tailgate. Every so often I got "check brake light/rear light" error.

You in the US or another country? I guess you're referring to the rear 'fog' light from what you're describing.

I am in US.
I keep getting the error for "check brake, rear, side light". Just try to clean up those contacts. I cleaned those on the side of the car but not those in the tailgate.

My 01 doesn't even have bulbs in that area.

Take a look at this and see if it will help you out:

Thanks for the info, I'll try to digest the operation about the removal tailgate panel section this weekend. Will see then. Thanks again.

I agree with JV...There's no tail light or brake light bulbs in the tailgate...the only light bulbs in there is the reverse light (unless you have the rear foglight as mentioned). In any case, to "pop off" the tailgate plastic panel, just use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the NONE moving half of the plastic panel. As indicated in the User's manual, there are 4 clips spaced evenly behind the panel that just "pop off"...but be careful as not to break them.
