Valve cover gasket. Search for the write ups. Also, check your intake manifold for oil. Your separator may be shot as well.

How many miles are on the car and what climate are you in?

Definitely your valve cover which can be a result of your oil separator going bad. But, if its the original valve cover gasket then it's probably just old and dried out...... Also, the hoses (dried up/ cracked) to your oil separator may be leaking too. If your getting bad gas mileage/ performance and hear a popping noise around the intake area of the engine then your separator is most likely going bad.

Weasel X5 is in your area and probably could help find a good indy mechanic and advise on replacement costs. Try and PM him.

Weasel will direct you in the right direction. But yeah, its probably gonna be the valve cover gasket and oil seperator... If you search on this site you'll find all kinds of threads on it..

Remove the black BMW shield and take a look at your oil separator hoses. If those look fine, then it's your valve cover gasket.
