16:9 screen issue
Please Help! I have a 2001 X5 with full sat nav, cd etc. it originally had the 4:3 screen with tape deck at the side. I have met with a guy locally who is selling a 16:9 widescreen version and know from looking through this site that it is straight forward to retrofit. I met with the guy who had used it in his 7 series but it has been sitting in his gargage for a year. When we plugged it into my X5 the menu screen etc appears as normal but you can just make things out, the whole picture just constanly scrolls across the screen at an angle and varies from slow to fast! When swapping back to the original it works perfect. We left the 16:9 monitor in the house for a week to warm up/dry out, if needed, but still no joy. I have been driving about for 2 days now and the problem has not got any better. The guy assures me it was working fine and we have no other way to test if it is still ok or if the fault is with my car? Any help what so ever would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance Gavin. |

try the following site
xdrivers.co.uk • BMW X owners forum and discussion I am sure somebody on there has had a similar problem, it was a matter of taking it apart and cleaning some contacts. You will need to join and put it up as a problem as the info on the old site and has been lost. I thought that the X5 16:9 screen had a slightly different viewing angle than the 5 and 7 series, (not sure). Phill |

Just disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and plug it back in. It is supposed to be PnP, but for some reason yours got hooked up with the 4:3 ratio.

Cheers Phil, the unit came from a X5 so the angle of screen should be fine, i will certainly double check, thanks. Will also try the other site as you suggest.
Chas, that is great advice. Will give this a go this afternoon and hopefully get to the bottom of it. As you say just just be plug and play but if you think this will solve it I will certainly give it a go. Thanks Gav. |

Just an update regarding the problem!
I did disconnect the battery for 5 minutes this afternoon but that did not fix the problem. When the scrolling goes slow you can just about make out the screen but think that is more the fact i am used to the menu screen from the old unit so know what each thing is. I managed to select the sat nav map when playing about and that came up pretty clear but still scrolling!!!??? Any help Cheers again Gav. |

That is.. well.. curious
![]() As far as I've seen this upgrade done, you just remove the 4:3 and throw in the 16:9 and you are done. The only times I got the scrolling image were when mixing PAL and NTSC formats (ie: PAL camera on the reverse camera input which is NTSC, just an example). Try the following scenario: -ignition off -unhook the MK4 (or whatever) unit, the blue and maroon connectors -at this point with ignition on and your 4:3, you should see the ugly blue style menus -ignition off -swap the 4:3 with the 16:9 This is just a shot in the dark, based on the assumption that you are mixing US and EU parts. |

Hello (Just an update)
I have a 2001 BMW X5 which has a 4:3 sat nav screen in the dash with a tape deck beside it. I had read that the newer widescreen type 16:9 is just a plug and play conversion. I have bought a second hand screen from a guy in Edinburgh who assures me was 100% working. After fitting it into my car the menu screen just scrolls, fast and slow, making the menu unreadable? I have disconnected the sat nav cd driver and reconnected, tried disconnecting battery for 5 mins and still no luck! I ordered a the latest sat nav discs and the guy who i ordered then from supplied a software download and then upload disc to the latest software incase the unit (screen) and car were confused with 2 different software versions. Hoping you have had similar issues and would be able to assist, fingers are crossed. Any advice would be great. Much appreciated Gavin |
