Fan in a/c control

Hi guys
Firstly hello I am new to this site and am really enjoying reading all the usefull imformation,I have recently changed to a 3.0d X5 from an E46 330ci, there seems to be a quiet fan noise coming from the left hand side of the climate control panel I understand this is the temperature sensor but it seems to run constantly this is concerning me as when I first looked at the car the battery was flat I have sat in the car for about 30 mins with the ignition off and it still carried on is this as it should be?
