Need info on buying used 4.4i 2003 X5
Hello Guys, another new member joining the X force. I am planning on buying a used 2003 X5 complete with all the goodies including bluetooth, GPS, TV, Xenon etc. It has around 85000miles on it. i had an general inspection done on the X5 and according to the report the front CV boots were leaking grease and there was a bit of oil leakage in the engine. The dealer has agreed to fix the cv boots and the oil leakage which according to the stealer seem to be coming from the Valve cover gasket. I would like to know if these are common problems with a car of this age and milage or am i about to buy a lemon. Furthermore what are your thoughts on reliablity of 2003 X5, built date Jan 2003. Previouly i owned a Toyota prado and they are built like a tank.
thanks in advance |

Both are very common repairs and no indicator that this X5 is a lemon or not. Use the Search feature above to find lots of info on other common repairs that you may run across at 85000 miles. Here's a few things you can search for: FSR (final stage resistor), water pump, coolant expansion tank, alternator, window regulator.

Your definitely not buying a Toyota, BMW's in my experience require fairly constant maintenance, Toyota's don't. When everything is working, fixed, and functional, the BMW will be the best car you've owned.

Thanks guys for all the info I should have the x5 in a day or 2. I have never driven a bmw so will see if the drive is as good as I people claim it to be. One more thing what's the best option to install angel eyes. I have bi-xenon and was planning on installing CCFL rings instead of changing both the headlights. Any thoughts!!!

Since the VCG is leaking, the culprit is probably the oil seperator. Have them replace that too. Its also known as the crankcase vent valve.

A 04 or 05 X5 benefit from significant upgrades including: variable valve timing, angle eyes, blue tooth and improved looks. If you want a X5, I would suggest getting a 05 or latter.
The E60 is a sedan it is smaller and lighter. The 525 does not have all wheel drive. I own a E61 and love it, but I also loved my X5. The fact that it is newer may make it better. Last edited by E61Silver; 02-17-2009 at 05:33 AM. |

find out the build date of the 2003 - late in that year BMW changed all the electronics from round pin to flat pin - the old round pin connections make upgrading very frustating - also get a service history to find out what's been done & when
