It was dark at the time but remember looking in my mirror to a cloud of steem!engine died and I pulled over. All water had gone from header tank and top hose to rad, water in the oil and when being loaded onto the truck oil dripping out aswell. Reading a few posts on here I'm guessing at a water pump sudden break up resulting in a blown head gasket on 1/2 heads? Hoping the oil is seaping out of gasket/dip stick tube! (she is a 2003 4.6is with 48000 miles and full bmw history) Has anyone out there had a similar experience that could pass on some possible causes? Could it have been a sudden blown gasket or something worse? Its being towed to BMW for inspection as they may pay some or all of the claim under goodwill due to low mileage! Any help or info on the matter would be great. Thank you

Maaaaan i feel so bad for you, really. 4.6is with such low miles should never have such thing happen.
I think it's your radiator, which triggered the rest. Keep us posted when you get a call from the Dealership |

I would guess something cracked and you lost your coolant, then you overheated your engine and blew a head gasket, or worse.

man that sucks
Had similar problem once. It was a very small hole in radiator. As I was driving, it was leaking, but not alot. Never noticed it. Finally got an oil temp. red flag and pulled over. Radiator was dry as a bone and whole motor was roasting. Didn't blow a gasket though, Thank God!!Most likely, you had a similar situation, just never smelled or saw the steam. |

The time it takes for an unnoticable crack to leak down enough coolant to 'expire' your engine is indeterminable. You got lucky it made it to wherever you were going. The crack was probably already there, and in that two hour trip you lost enough coolant to overheat. That it was at the conclusion of a trip is pure coincidence, and you are quite lucky it was not sooner.

Thought I would have a quick look before it goes to the steelers and after removing the engine cover the side under the right hand block is oiled up!So Im guessing the right side head gasket is blown!
Just got to find out why next and have repaired. Does any one know if you can skim 1 side or would both need to be done to maintain balance?
