4.8is running hot?
http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/e...us-bmw-x5.html But I noticed my coolant temperature (KTEMP) was running at 100 degrees Celsius (212F)!! That's water boiling temperatures!! But the needle would always remain in the middle. Drove the car around and it would stay at that temperature constantly. It would probably dropped 3-4 degrees if I accelerated hard, but then it would quickly rise up back to 100F. Outside temperature was 40 F. No difference between stop and go traffic or highway driving. I checked the coolant to make sure it was properly bleed (including the heater core) and it all was fine. Took it to the dealership and they said they run a diagnostic software and run it for 55 min and everything seemed normal. Electric fan would come off and on as expected. I accessed the menu on my E39 M5 and then on my E46 M3 and drove them for 150 miles each, and they both run between 79 - 80 F. Same ambient temperature. Can you guys check yours to see if that is really normal? Thanks a lot. |

Did you change the coolant yourself? If yes did you bleed the cooling system properly? Check the coolant level when engine is cold to see if it is too low and top it off if needed. Get the engine to temp and bleed the circuit using the bleeding screw on the expansion tank. If the bleeding was not done properly air may have been trapped when the coolant was changed which would affect the circulation of coolant through the cooling system. As a result the engine would run hotter than it should. Saw that often on BMWs including mine.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I did all that. I always work on my cars, so I knew of that possibility. As I mentioned before, I even took it to the dealership but they couldn't find anything wrong either. I got the "it's normal" line.
I called a friend of mine. He checked his 4.6is. He's running even hotter!! 108 C (225 F)!! |

When I first read the post and found the hidden menu, I have watched my temp. I have a 4.6 and my temp is anywhere between 104 and 108. So I think it is normal in these cars.

108 C!!! Damn! That's well above water boiling point (100 C)!! I feel better now that mine runs cooler than that. But still, compared to the other two M cars, it seems to run 20+ degrees celsius higher (30+ F).
I wonder if it's related to the location of the temperature sensor (exhaust ports?). |
