US e53 engine effect vs. european version

I saw from the user manual that the us version has 225 hp, while the euro version has 231hp...

Anyone knows why this is.?

Also, is this just a tuning thing, or are there some components that are different..

Same actual power, but different measuring standards. The Euro (ps) horsepower is just measured differently than the North American SAE standard.

I thought it had to do with stricter emission standards in the US which lower horsepower by a bit. Guess you learn something new every day.

That is correct, 414 US horsepower on my E90 M3 and 420 euro horsepower!

The definition of the HP (Horse Power) unit can be confusing and varies depending on the standard used. US uses SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers) standard while Europe uses DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standard. Multiply HP SAE by 1.0139 to get to HP DIN.
Not to mention the BHP (Brake Horse Power) which measures the horsepower of an engine without taking into account the loss due to all the additional components that consume power like alternator, power steering, water pump, etc...

While not true for the M54 engine in the X5, that can be true as well if the difference is more than the SAE/Metric hp difference. A good example is the early M3 which was detuned for the US, or the new X5 diesel which has a different engine management program because of emissions requirements and the new urea injection system.

It's the conversion system, unless there is a clear stated difference.

For example, the 2,5 litre N52 motor makes 218PS or 215hp.
