Faulty FSU (Final Stage Unit)

Hey guys I have a problem with my front ventilation fans and I am suspecting it is because of a faulty FSU. What happens is no matter what fan speed I set, the fan would either not run at all or it will stay in its own set speed. Also it won't run at all and then out of nowhere it blows at a high speed for a couple of seconds and then shuts off. What really set my suspicion was yesterday night when the car was off no key in the ignition and the blower was still running. And no I did not set the auxiliary ventilation! The blower motor literally had a mind of its own! So before I buy the FSU part, I would like to ask you guys if you had a similar situation like this before, and did replacing the part fix this problem? Thanks!

I haven't had this problem myself, but those symptoms are exactly what others have reported. Blower running with key off being a classic sign.

Had mine go the other month, and my signs were the fan not functioning at all! (left my poor wife with "manual defrost!" (translated, wipe the window with a napkin or coat sleeve every 3 minutes!! )
its a really simple fix if youre a double jointed mechanical type!
still its an easy repair, and if you get a part from a wrecker, it can be quite economical! (paid $20 for one!)
best of luck!

RFaber, I WISH it solved it for me.
my motor went. I replaced my FSU with another factory part and that did not help
blower motor it was, after we did some electrical troubleshooting.
I just hope its not yours BMW E53

Thanks for the replies! I have already taken out the part, now I'm just going to order it and hopefully that solves the problem!

I had the same issue.. I took it out and fixed it with a soldering iron, some solder and flux

Really easy actually but you need to have experience soldering.

The hardest part is literally removing all the glue that surrounds the broken connections..
I used the soldering iron to slowly scrape off the glue and cleaning and scraping and so on till I had a clear view of the points that needed to be retouched.

I cleaned it and put some flux and put some solder and it was all good. Put it back together and works perfectly now.. no issues.

in my case the FSU was gone, blower motor works perfectly so it wasnt the problem. i did read in my manual that it was a pretty big job to re and re the blower motor! not looking forward to that if i have to do it down the road!!!

anyone know if there is a fuse solely for the fsu or is it tied in to the fuse that controls the blower motor?
