E53 2005 X5 4.8is Nav question

I have a couple questions between my nav systems in my car. I have looked through old threads but cant seem to locate and was hoping someone can tell me?

In my 2003 E46 M3 I have factory nav with cd player behind screen. It does NOT have DSP and does not tell me distance to destination or arrival time. DVD based...

In my 05 X5 4.8is I have factory nav with "cassette" player behind screen. It DOES have DSP and tells me distance to destination, arrival time and more. DVD based...

First, how is it that my newer BMW has a cassette player but has more functionality. Second, can I change to a model that has cd player and retain all functionality above.

Third, for my M3 can I change to a newer model that has dsp, and gain functionality like that in my X5?

Does anyone know who made these for BMW?

Thank you,
Mick

Ok, so

Who made the LCD HU?
Alpine. Here you can see the sticker on the back of the HU:
BMW E53 X5 E39 M5 Navigation and Head Unit and Changer - eBay (item 260704761741 end time Dec-17-10 10:30:38 PST)

DSP has nothing to do with displaying the arrival time. Adding/removing DSP on a bimmer, will not affect in any way if your arrival time is displayed.

Can I still add DSP to a non-DSP car?
Yes, in terms that nothing is impossible. However, I find it a total PITA to do that, at least compared to the poor quality of the DSP. If I didn't have DSP on my car, I would not bother upgrading to DSP, I would rather add some aftermarket amp and speakers instead.

Can I replace my tape deck with a CD deck?
Unfortunately the E53 16:9 only comes as a tape deck, there is no CD version. Only the MID types come with a CD deck. The only way to play CDs with 16:9 is the CD changer.

E46 16:9 will not replace the E53 16:9. The size is slightly different. If you really want to have a CD deck in your dashboard, instead of using the CD changer in the trunk, you will have to ditch the OEM 16:9 for an aftermarket headunit. Not worthy IMO, you'd better get CD changer emulator that will play MP3s and keep the OEM look.

As about the MP3 capability on the E46 CD deck, I can't tell for sure, my only E46 had tape deck In case it can eventually read MP3s, you will need a software update; that means either dealer or somebody kind enough to run the SSS software on your car. Since I am the fan of USB stick media, instead of CDs, I would use the same approach as mentioned above.
