Chrome gauge rings install question

Is there some trick to disengaging the plastic clips on the back of the instrument cluster to get it open? I know this doesnt seem that complicated, but I used a pair of needle-nose pliers and was only able to get one of them (the center one) disengaged before I finally gave up on it. All of the others would NOT push down or stay in an "unlocked" position. Is this easier than I'm making it? I'm thinking my pliers are a little too wide and are preventing me from pushing the clip down once I turn it, so I'll get a new set this afternoon. Any other tips/suggestions?
