To my knowledge heated steering wheel was only offered as option starting with 2005 4.8is. No 4.6is or even 2004 4.8is had heated wheel option. See below screenshot from 2004 X5 catalog.

Gotta admit, the heated steering wheel seems trivial, but it's great on those cold mornings!

I believe LeMansX5 is right, while the heated steering wheel was offered basically from the very beginning on X5's (3.0, 4.4) as long as you got the cold weather package as well, the 'is models didn't get it until the end, apparently b/c of their "sports" steering wheels were not designed with that function. Fortunately BMW is turning this around and more recent sports steering wheels can come heated.
