What might a clicking sound mean?

As my wife drove off at lunchtime, I heard what sounded like clicking from the engine, almost as if not all cylinders were firing properly. The clicking increased in frequency as she accelerated. Any ideas?

Where the wheels turned when rolling forward........if so sounds like CV joints!

I just had my front left done bc there was a terrible clicking on turning. Another indication to say it's the CV joint could be grease all over the rim.
