Need help: '03 X5 transmission fluid capacity

I have a '03 X5 3.0i. I need to know the how much fluid is replaced with a simple drain and re-fill of the transmission.

I drained the fluid and forgot to capture it in a separate pan so that I could measure how much came out. Doh! I've found several sets of instructions that indicate you fill it up to the fill hole, then start the engine and engage each gear, then top up from the fill hole as necessary.

Well I tried that and when I opened the fill hole with the engine running trans fluid came shooting out everywhere!

I don't think I've put enough back in, but according to the procedures I've found I've put too much in. I put about 2 qts back in before I started it, it seemed like a lot more than that came out.

The tag on the side of the trans indicates it is a GM part No. 96024222, anyone know what trans that is? A google search turns up nothing.

If anyone can help me get the right amount of fluid back in my trans I would be grateful.

Just to close out this thread, it turns out I was using the wrong fill hole.

The fill is on the rear drivers side, 17mm socket to remove. Once I used the right hole, the procedure worked as advertised.

My X5 has 60k. I was really glad I changed the fluid, it was a nasty brown color and smelled pretty bad. I filled with Amsoil ATF. I plan to do the drain and fill a few more times (every 10k or so) until it the fluid is a bright red again.

TO BEGIN, THE X5 3.0 HAS A GM TRANS, IT'S A " HYDRAMATIC 5L40E " MADE IN STRASBOURG, FRANCE. THIS TRANS ALSO FITS SOME NEW CADILLACS LIKE THE CTS. THE DRAIN REFILL CAPACITY IS 5.5 QTS. IT TAKES 6.5 QTS IF YOU REMOVE THE PAN AND CHANGE THE FILTER. IF YOU KEEP THE PAN OFF AND LET IT DRIP OVERNIGHT, IT WILL TAKE 7.5 QTS. A VARIETY OF ATF,S WILL WORK IN THIS TRANNY INCLUDING A SYNTHETIC DEXRON VI.
