changed the auto transmission fluid

I recently acquired a 2003 X5 3.0 automatic with 100m miles. I ignored the advice of the dealer and most posters on this site and had the fluid professionally changed along with the filter and kit. I also had the diff and transfer cases changed. So far so good, with 1000 miles since the change. I just cannot grab hold of the idea that fluids are forever given the stresses they endure. This professional BMW non-dealer repair shop says that the new definition of lifetime is 100,000 miles and they recommend what I did.

I had the BMW repair guy figure this out. He looked at at tag on the tranny. I know my tranny did not require the super expensive stuff as some of them do. I figured having a professional do this critical work was worth the $380.

Most definitely! My independent guy charged me $400 for the tranny fluid and filter change. The filter itself is already $100, fluid is about $20-$30 per quart - the X takes about 6.5 qt. I have put about 8K miles on it since the change...no issue so far.

I also had him do the front/rear diff and transfer case fluid changes for an additional $250.

The cost of the transmission change, the transfer case and the diff, including fluids and kits and labor was $380. He charges 90/hour and quotes by the job.....it runs fine still and I have over 1000 miles on it.

That's a very good price for all the fluids/filter change. Hoped the X is taking care of you for treating her well
