Considering a 2006 CPO X5 4.8is
Can anyone give me a reliability/quality perspective on the 2006 4.8is? I tend to keep my BMW's a LONG time (200K miles). I realize BMW's aren't the cheapest to maintain, but they're worth it. Just want to ensure I'm not getting into a mess if I bought the '06 4.8is. Thanks in advance. |

Not the exact same engine per se, but the next iteration of it. I don't have a 4.8is so I can't tell you anything exact about reliability (I'm sure others will chime in) but if you keep your cars that long you should get a new car with a full warranty so then you can maintain it well and it will last you to 200,000 miles. Buying used and you might end up paying for someone else's poor judgment in maintenance.

I'm a newbie here also researching a X5 purchase. I recently saw this post where someone was looking at an 06 4.8. It has a lot of good stuff in it!!

I recommend you test drive both back to back. There's quite a performance difference between the E53 4.8is & E70 4.8i. Performance-wise, the answer will be clear...reliability-wise, you may want to go with a 2009, however a 2006 E53 would still have factory warranty and you can extend at expiration.
And yes...Alpina had a part in the development of the M62 4.6is engine but the N62 4.8is engine is pure bad-ass! Do your research but the test drive should convince you. |

Just my two cents but if you are considering a CPO X5 definitely check out the BMW CPO Inspection Guidelines document found here: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/g...formation.html
I would definitely have a copy at your disposal as you are reviewing your options. |

If your intent is to keep it for around 200K, then I'd rather get the 09. Its worth the peace of mind. I will definitely step up to the E70 maybe next year and I have my eye on the 4.8i. My daughter will inherit the E53 for college.

Thanks for the input guys.
Hey chilliwilli, as for the performance-wise, you're saying it will be clear. My initial impression would be the E53 4.8is would be much quicker but the E70 has a more refined suspension/ride. Your sense as well? We will be test driving both today...hopefully. |
