I am suddenly experiencing a very sharp mechanical click-click noise from what appears to be the transmision/transfer case on my '01 3.0. It occurs under moderate to heavy accelaration from standstill and is prolonged the harder I accelerate. Sounds more like a straining noise under load or a gear slipping. Much like when you put car in park while its still in forward motion or when driveshaft slips. Does not seem to affect accelaration itself, though hard to tell and occurs in reverse also.
With windows open, noise definitly coming from undercarriage and loud enough to be noticeable to the passerby. With windows closed interior noise seems to emanate from the rear most times, but transmits through the center or front floorboard tunnel as well.
My accelaration habits are heavy footed and relentless, tearing three driveshafts and ripping a hole twice in the floorboard of my '82 635 where the differential mounts. Now I'm fearing dire damage somewhere in the drivetrain though I find it unlikely in an automatic.
Any indication noise could be caused by the self leveling system or a bad transmision mount or bushing?
Anyone have similar experience?
