Faulty Traction control unit

Hi all,
I drive a 2001 X5 3.0, 76000 Mi. Recently the ABS, Break and traction lights are comming on and off. Took the car to the dealer and was told that i have a faulty traction control unit. The replacement would cost me around $1000. Have any of you experienced this before?
Is this something i could replace (DIY)? If yes any recommendation on where to buy the new unit.
Thanks for the help.
AJ
