Brakes

I have a 2002 X5 with 37K miles and the brake sensor light came on. How long are the original brakes supposed to last if the X5 has been used normally, meaning not excessive braking. Is this normal wear.

I got 45K out of the front brakes on my '01, before r & r, though the rears are still ok.

37 is probably on the "low norm" scale. It ALL depends on your driving style, stop and go vs. long trips, hills, etc.,imo.

This Is a heavy car.

Thanks a lot for your responses. I feel much better now, I thought there was some defect on my brakes. But I guess you're right about the weight of the vehicle and the way the vehicle is driven. Thanks again.

Looks like my brake light is on at 26K, I'll be heading in for a brake job.

Good Luck, hopefully I'll be doing mine this weekend. Shouldn't be too hard. I printed up the instructions that is in the forum. I've done brakes before and it seems to be the same work except for the brake sensor light which is appears to be pretty simple too. A friend of mine who works at Firestone is going to assist me so I shouldn't have any problems.

I only got 25K from my original OEM pads. However, I have over 50K on the Mintex Rd Box pads I currently have on the vehicle and they are still going strong. The OEM pads are "soft", which is great for stopping power but the downside is the life of the pads and the amount of brake dust generated.

I recommend Mintex Red Box or Axxis Deluxe pads if you are planning on doing a brake job.

Well I did my brakes, I used the instructions given by Hyundu. The instructions were great and the tips were too. I did it all in about 3 hours. Not too shabby. Good Luck to anyone else who is going to do their's too. Very simple. Later

Congrats on your DIY locomoto! I believe labor rates in Miami are about $115.00hr. The money saved can go towards a nice dinner and drinks, future mods or even a donation to X5world
