Tire Rotation

Let me start off by saying, I am not the handiest guy on the planet. So if this question comes off dumb, its well,,,, I am! I was just reading that BMW does not recomend tire rotation, is this true? And if so, I am assuming it applies to the X series as well?

Thanks!

I'm no expert on the subject, but I think that since most of the newer tires have a rotation direction (arrow pointing forward) it makes it difficult to rotate your tires without unmounting them from your wheels...

It might be a European thing but I always thought tyre rotation referred to swapping the front and rear tyres, theory being the rears wear quicker than the fronts.

With most BMW, tyres are smaller on the front, therefore tyre rotation not possible.

Probably wrong but you never know..

Tires/rotation

An oft discussed subject - search the archives.

- OEM Michie MVX are not directional
- BMW manual does not suggest rotation - indeed, discourages it.

Personal experience :

at 4 years/60k miles and after much research I replaced my nearly worn Michies with the same. The old tires had many K left but kinda getting close to the wear ridge. Going into a winter season of SoCal ski trips; I wanted a good depth of tread. While the Michie Energy performance in snow/cold is far from great; I live in San Diego and with 1 or 2 snow trips per winter month, they represent the best compromise.

With no rotation, a correctly setup X seems to wear all tires very nearly equally, rendering rotation a waste of time IMHO.

Tire rotation comes in a couple forms, the front to rear and side to side setup. With most cars though, especially BMW, the tires are directional. This means the treat is mapped in a certain direct and thus swapping the tires side to side doesn't work. But usually the tires are matched, meaning their size is the same and thus can be rotated rear to front.

For example if you X5 has 255/55/18's on all four corners you can rotate the rear drivers side tire to the front drivers side and the rear passenger side tire to the front passenger side. HOWEVER, if you have staggered tires, meaning one is bigger then the other (for instance 275/35/20 front tires and 315/30/20 rear tires) you can not rotate them.

Example:
