P0175 Code 2002 BMW X5 3.0i

Hello All,

Ironic story, but I went to the dealership to look at the 335i's they had in stock and when leaving my service engine light on my 2002 X5 3.0i (with 100,300 miles on it) came up for the first time. It's like my X was angry at me.

I got a OBD reader and it read out P0175 System to rich Bank 2. I checked the forums and apparently this comes up a good amount with a P0172 code, however mine had only the P0175 code.

Anyways, I reset the code last night and drove for about 50 miles and the code has not come back on. Should I keep driving until it comes back on or should I get it checked?

Could it have been a fluke?

Update:

I cleared the code and it stayed off for about 20 days. My service engine light just came back on with the following codes:

P0175
P0172

Searching around on the forums some people think that it is the MAF. How can I tell whether or not I need to replace the MAF or not as this is a $300 part that I would prefer not to do trial and error to fix. Any other diagnostic data I can gather?

Thanks!

I had a similar P0174 code recently. I looked under the hood and saw a tear in the hose from MAF to engine. Which explained the system too lean

With the system too lean and system too rich faults at the same time you most likely have 2 problems. What I usually find (and back up with data read through the GT1) is the lean misture faults to be vacuum leaks and/or torn intake boot and/or leaky cyclone valve. And the rich mixture to be faulty MAF sensor. (backed up by reading the multiplicative values before and after replacement)

Thanks for the responses. For the MAF replacement, do you recommend trying to clean the MAF first and then seeing if this solves the issue?

Some people I have seen recommend:
CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner spray

Also, is the MAF a common weak point in 2002 X5 3.0i's?

Thanks!

Yeah, you could definitely try the cleaner on the mass air flow sensor, it is a cheap fix if it is just dirty/slow. But it doesn't work all the time. It would be nice if you could rear the multiplicative values, clean the sensor, drive it a dozen miles or so then read them again... see if they're leveling out.

Great, thank you for the follow up. Is there a scanner / tool I should buy which would give me the readout of the multiplicative values?

Thanks!

The original BMW equipment (GT1) is the only scanner I know of that can read the BMW propitiatory info like that. The good thing is there are now companies installing the bmw software on laptops for purchase. A few on this forum have bought them from yohotech, maybe someone is close enough to your area to offer help?
