No No No TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROG!!
I have 2004 X5 (TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROG) When I turn the key to the #3 position, the engine will just crank endlessly and TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROG comes up! Any ideas?

It might not be the transmission. Check your alternator, starter, battery. It will go in the TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROG. for those reasons too.

if battery is okay and charging system ok, a most common on this engine MY 2004 4.4 would be a faulty ignition switch, does the coolant temp gauge ped red? this indicates a faulty PT-CAN. The ignition switch on this car wakes up PT-CAN. No DME communication will not transmit coolant temp to the Cluster, and No Crank Sensor Signal to the Transmission, which will give you Trans Failsafe.
