Will an 05 tail light work on an 02?

You might have to get the adapter plugs.
There is a rear light retro-kit for pre 10/03. The kit includes 2 adapter plugs.

The '05 pattern doesn't match what is in the tailgate of an '02. I have an '02 3.0i and almost bought the new version, but went with the '02 to match it. It was going to be another $240+ to change it all out.

The newer versions are more "clear." Look at pics to see the difference, or better yet, go & look up close. I like the newer ones better - I think it is '04 & up..............
