Ok so now that attendance has been taken (lol), is anyone else having to add a quart of oil every 1,400 miles to keep the oil level between the hatch marks?

Oddly enough that is still technically within BMW specs, but I don't see any reason you should need that much oil... I would first question the cyclone valve (oil separator) as if the diaphram is old/cracking it can cause oil consumption. And if that is all good and properly operating I would pull a few spark plugs to see if she looks to be burning it off through combustion from another source.

'01 70k+ miles, 5 spd manual trans=high rpms on highway...

If I do 1500 of mostly "around town/around the county mtns/some highway runs, I usually need less
than a half qt in that mileage window.

If we do a run north to NJ/NY and back, about 1500+ miles of nearly all highway, I may need close to a qt.
I don't keep OCD type records, but I don't think my oil consumption has increased any over the past 20-30k miles, however.

And, the coolant "leak" has healed itself to just a few ounces every 2000-3000 miles.

I would doubt that many report "no/very little" oil consumption with medium-high mileage on the odo...
