Fully synthetic, viscosity etc depends on ambient temperatures your x5 lives with, do a search on oil in the forum and you will find millions of posts.....I use 0-40w, dont let the x5 run without oil, top it up soon

From page 152 of the manual
Approved oils are in SAE classes 5W-40 and 5W-30. These oils may be used for driving in all ambient temperatures. http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/e5...20-%202005.pdf
