if you like the diamaris, the latitude sport would be the successor to this. should be an overal better tire, but I don't think it's in your size. the cross contact UHP is a good alternative if you want to keep the performance aspects. however, all of these are UHP summer tires; you will probably get increased wear over an All Season. A good step with a Latitude Tour HP or even the Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico. Both are asymmetric, not directional, so you probably will get less noise out of them then a directional pattern such as a grabber UHP.

Thanks to everybody for the input so far. After researching on tire rack I see that the load rating of the Michelin Latitudes is XL, higher than others.

since I tow two different 5,000 lb boat/trailer combos at highway speeds I think the Latitudes would be the best compromise for me.

any further thoughts from those of you who tow things with your X5's? (mine, again is an '04 4.4 with sport package)

I also installed the Michelin Latitude HPs as a replacement for the Michelin Damaris that came with the X. I needed an all season tire - THe Damaris were better in summer/warm weather in terms of more precise handling and road holding IMO. The Latitudes are good but I felt like I lost a bit of the edge in handling while gaining the ability to drive in snow.

Unless you go with a UHP summer, you will lose a bit of grip and responsiveness going away from the UHP summer group. I believe the Grabber UHP's are XL as well. If you want better, although not great, snow capability, get the Latitiudes. If you need more summer handling, get the UHP's.

I went the route for the Pirelli Scorpion Assimetrico Zero. It was either a toss-up between the Pirelli or the Michelin Lattitudes (both All Season tires), but the rep at Mavis Tire said to go with the Pirelli's. I followed his advice. Soon as I got the new tires I instantly noticed a softer and quieter ride. Handling difference compared with the Diamaris was barely noticable. I have not yet tried the Pirelli's in snow though.

If you are going the A/S route take a look at the Hankook Ventos for a lower cost option with probably better light snow traction than the michies.

I too did the coin toss decision over to Pirelli as well a couple years ago as the Latitudes were too new with very little reviews. Loved most everything about them, except for wear. 20k miles later, I wanted to give the Latitudes a tried - love most everything about these Michy, except for their looks - they don't have the broad shoulders that those Pirellis had. Will have to see how well these Latitudes hold up on wears

Seeing your pictures reminds me how much I missed those chunky looking Pirellis

I, too, went the Michelin Latitude HP after my Diamaris were nearing "slick" stage - I feel alot safer in wet weather now, but still have a winter tire setup on 17" rims - mine is a 2001 4.4 Sport and I have towed trailers, though not as heavy as your 5000# load - never had a problem, so far - Idaho to South Carolina to NJ and back - but best milage was keeping it around 60 vs 70-80

I bought Continental Cross Contact UHP tires (19") for my 2001 4.4 Sport.
Nice and quiet, and they appear to be wearing pretty well
