Quick simple question...

My Service Engine Soon light came on... Is this a CEL? (Check Engine Light) or is it telling me something else?

LOL mtX5, youre the man you know. Its been going off and on for like 2 weeks now. When I first noticed it was when I drove my X5 til 7ML on my range. I then thought that I had an air bubble in my tank, which I dont even know is possible. But anyways, I kept riding around with it to see if I can spot something. My brake light is on now which this Saturday I will be installing new rotors and pads.

But my assumption 2 days ago was a faulty gas tank cover because everytime I turn it to lock, it doesn't really click. is the click really noticable when you lock it?

Well mine doesn't click. I'll go stop by the dealer and pick one up. Then see if that works.

For future reference. If the Service Engine Soon light comes on again, can it be checked by a diagnostic tool?

once you install the new gas cap, the light won't go away immediately. you will have to drive it around for a bit and then it will go out. if it doesn't it may be something else. it can be checked by a diagnostic tool. it can be difficult to find out what caused that light though.. which is why the dealer charges a hefty sum.

Thanks mtX5. I'm betting it is the gas cap. Ive noticed after several fills. The light would go away and there's time when it doesn't. Maybe after a drive and bumps here and there, it would loosen the gas cap.

There was one time last week when I noticed the light came on. Went to go check the cap, the cap was already in it's loosen possible.

Let's hope it's just a $20 gas cap.
