A question about replacing pulleys
I need to replace my two tensioner pulleys and the single idler pulley. I was told the lower tensioner comes as an assembly only. It seems that the upper one comes as an assembly only also? As for the idler pulley, my understanding is that it comes alone. Has anyone replaced these parts and know for sure? Thanks. |

The mechanical tensioner is no longer made. It is now replaced with a hydraulic one, this "updated part" has a replacable pulley. The idler pulley is also avail seperatly. There is no lower pulley unless u are talking about the mechanical tensioner for the a/c compressor.

Yes, I am talking about the lower tensioner pulley that is for the A/C belt. Is that replaced as an entire unit?

Can I ask why you are replacing them?

I have a 95 M3 with 205k that was making some big squeeks/chirps/misc..and a whine. I thought it was my alternator, so I remove the belts and low and behold ALL the bearing in the tensioner pulleys, idler, and alternator were shot. I replaced them all and the car is ever so quiet now.
My X5 doesnt make that much noise, but I'm going to assume those bearings are on their way out (at 145k miles). |
