X5 coolant system woes, but still love it.
Well my 01 4.4 just lost either the water pump or a lower coolant hose. Last night I over-heated and there was a small steady stream of coolant from the front of the x5.
Don't know if I was lucky or unlucky will find out shortly after I take everything apart, but the temp gauge never went past halfway, though it works at least from cold to half way. I did hear the WP or some pulley in the front of the car squeal, before i sensed white smoke from the front of the car, to me thinking fluid got to one of the pulleys or the wp pulley going out. In any case, X5 is at home safe and drained of fluids. I will be replacing the WP and thermostat, all coolant hoses, expansion tank is about 2 years old, will inspect as with the fill cap. With that I am also going to go ahead and replace the valley pan as I don't want to tear the engine bay again, just do it once, and for all. Also will be replacing the oil separator valve and both upper and lower vent hoses. I will also be replacing the valve cover gaskets for both heads, been waiting for a weekend to do that, (explains why I'm replacing also the Oil Separator, have a small leak in the Driver side Valve cover) Lots to do, but since I am already in the engine bay taking things apart might as well do it all. My question is, I read in some previous posts about while I have the intake manifold off, that I should replace some gaskets in the rear for those are problematic for the X5 as well, does any one know of these gaskets and what the Part Numbers are? In the end, I know all the work will pay off knowing that all the items in the cooling system has been cared for and I wont need to deal with it. I do know it was inevitable that this will happen for there has been a slight small leak about a cup of coolant a week needs to be placed in the expansion tank, but this has gone for 3 years, thinking it may be valley pan or one of the plastic connectors for one of the hoses has developed a leak. But I do know this is the original WP and hoses (except lower coolant hose for the expansion tank.) And the X5 has about 113k miles, I think it has been a win since this is the first time the WP Quit. Edit***Cliff Notes*** Any one know of the gaskets that cause issues in the back side of the intake Mani or in that are of the engine? Even thought it may not cause issues for me now, since I will have the intake out, I might as well replace it. Also, Thought I had been a member longer and more posts ( did they get reset when the site changed from X5 World?) |
