Exclamation Drifting on highway an hour ago.

Passing a car on an accelerating lane on my way back home. On my left side is grass land. I was at about 55mph, and his was at around 45. When I was approaching and ready to pass his car, this guy just didn't notice there's a car on his left, and he suddenly changed lane almost in a milli second.

When his car is almost hitting mine, I didn't even have time to horn so I made a fast steering to left, then the tricky thing happened. My X started drifting front with about 30 degrees angle to the left, then I steer to the right, the car still drifting front but 30 degrees angle to the right. It went back and forth 3 times before hitting straight back on the road. ALL the cars behind me were scared at least 300 feet away.

What happened? ABS was working? mud made the left wheels traction different and cause the drifting??? Freaked me out............

At least nobody hurts, nor cars..........

ABS/DSC can only do so much, the weight and speed of the vehicle will be more than DSC can keep fully in check on the wet muddy shoulder. Just imagine what could have happened if DSC was off!

I didn't turn my DSC on..........

Do I need to turn it on during regular driving? Does it consume more gas or slow down acceleration?

I don't even know what scenario DSC will work.....

Your DSC should always be on automatically unless you switched it off.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't effect fuel economy at all and it's better to have on all the time.

Considering your posts so far, it'd probably be worth clarifying that if the light is on in the cluster, DSC is off. If the light isn't on, DSC is on.

Your DSC is ALWAYS on unless your manually turn it off. Glad you're ok though. It doesn't have any effect in gas mileage btw.

Let's just say this one more time so that we are sure you get it.

Repeating what Vig and Tij have stated....

When you start the car, the DSC is on. There is no light. Leave the button alone.

When you push the DSC button, and a light comes on in the dashboard (DSC, DTC, etc), that means that DSC is off (the light is a warning, not a confirmation), and you don't have the benefit of Dynamic Stability Control when you next come into a similar unstable situation.

You're totally right. I just checked it. When I start the engine, the triangle light is on then off, which means the DSC is on automatically.

Thank you so much, guys. I learned so much!

I love this forum!
