Rear cup holder wont stay shut

The rear cupholder in my X5 keeps sliding open when I go over bumps, and sometimes I cant make it stay shut at all. Any ideas what is causing this, or can I just remove the spring or whatever it is that slides it out? I am worried that oen day a passenger will kick it and break it.

I had the same problem a while back, they only way i could fix it was to buy a new cupholder assembly. It was $$$ too.

If you have a spare 45 minutes, are handy with a phillips head screwdriver, and have access to ordering a replacement unit off of eBay (~$100), it's not too hard.

eBay item number: 350072251048

PM me, I'd be happy to talk you through it.

Is it possible to just remove whatever spring mechanism there is that pushes the drink holder out?
