2001/02/03 X5 4.4i's (WHY UNTIL IT LASTS?)

Okay, This has been bugging the crap out of me, I own an 01 X5 4.4i, I unlike alot of you don't have that much money but I purchased my X5 at 112K. The car to me still runs great and I do not feel that it is at the "end" of its lifespan. The car still runs like a beast and I am sure i can still put alot of mileage on it so why the heck are there people on the boards saying "Ill ride it out til it dies" or "01 X5 wont last to long im sure".... I dont go by how much milage the car has, I go by how much a person took care of the car. If one runs it well and takes good care of it, im sure it can even last til 300k.....

Don't recall too many posts of that tone...some/most of us that have an '01,
like it a lot; others have moved to a newer model. That 300k is doable, but
some parts/systems are going to have to be replaced along the way.
I love our old '01!

I am with you both. I just bought mine, granted I got lucky and found one with only 65K miles, but I still love this thing. I have had some people ask me why I just bought an '01, I just smile and say it is a BMW!!

How you take care of it and what you want to spend to keep it up will determine how long it lasts. I just rolled 168K on mine - spent around $12K in the past few years to keep it running, still have a couple of grand to spend on itmes that are wearing out (motor mounts, shocks, etc.). But I plan on going another 100K bc I love my X (and its paid for)!!

It's because X5's aren't Honda Civic's in terms of reliability and maintenance isn't cheap if you don't do the work yourself; and as they age the maintenance costs become a larger percent of how much one might be worth to begin with. Not trying to discourage anyone, but it's something to keep in mind.

That's exactly it. For me, ill take the $10-12k in maintenance over the next 3-4 years (conservative estimate if youre in the 60-75k mile range) and buy something newer maybe even with a warranty remaining. Then when I sell that car in a few years it will still have some value to put towards the next car (unlike an X5 with say 200k+ miles). No brainer for me (I'm a numbers guy) unless you can handle all the work yourself- and have a spare car.
