Car Seized By Police - Help with data dots

Can anyone offer any advice ? My car of a day old was today seized when I tried to register it. Apparently due to an anomoly in the identification of the vehicle which I believe entails the engine number, the VIN and the data dots sprayed into the vehicle all over. Problem is they claim they cant tell me exactly what the problem is and they might take a few weeks to investigate it !!!

It seems from watching that they had the trouble with the data dots - either couldn't find any or they showed the wrong VIN (?)

Anyone strike this before ? I am 99.99% confident that the car is not stolen or anything as I checked the dealer who originally sold it, to the owner I bought it from and everything checks out including BMW's and the states stolen vehicle registers .....

what gives ?
Seedar.

Wow, that sucks! What are these "data dots" you mention? Sounds really suspicious to me. Perhaps you're in the midst of getting "Overhauled"? Hope you get to the bottom of it soon and do let us know the outcome. GL!

data dots

They are some tiny ID tags that I believe are sprayed all over the car that a particular device can read to extract the VIN to identify stolen or re-badged vehicles.

You're right it really sucks particularly when BMW have told me its fine !

i just hope it doesn't take too long for them to sort it out and get my 325ci back that I had for a whole 24 hours before getting it taken away :-(

I heard from one source that sometimes the car factories mess up the numbers and put on mismatching data dots to the plated VIN, but I wouldn't have thought that would be a mistake BMW are likely to make - at least without picking it up before shipping.

I'll keep you posted.

Doesn't sound too good. Hopefully everything will turn out okay.

Buddy bought a 740, registered it thrpugh DMV, etc.

2 Months later , local law turns up and tows the car cause it turns out it was stolen !
End of story - Buddy lost out a whole lotta $$$$

Seedar, are you in Australia? I skimmed the Datadots site that Acezoned gave, and it looked like BMW was using these in Australia, but didn't say it was using them elsewhere. First I have heard of them.

I think this is a good time to contact a lawyer in case things get fuzzy.

Yes, Australia. Its now resolved - the police investigated confirmed that it had been seized because no data dos could be found by the registration department. However the police found them without a problem and told me they didn't know why the Registration Department couldn't see them and took the car !!!
