Cigarette Burns
Saturday it was nice out here in Jersey and I got the X all cleaned up during the day, so I decided I would be the one to drive everyone out that night. At some point in the maddness that was the ride home I gave the OK to light up and someone christened my seats and roof with 2 cigarette burns. Yeah, I know...I was thinking the same thing! ![]() ![]() Is there anything I could do to fix this? I think I remember someone mentioning a spray for the headliner. Will I have to get that small section of the seat cut out? Any advice is appreciated.

The best advice is to stick with your word! If they cant respect your decision not to light up... they have no respect for you and anything else... id make him/her fix it!

I hate to say it but you're probably out of luck and will have to have those pieces replaced entirely. I smoke, outside at home, and am generally really good about never smoking inside my cars. But I did light up on a long drive and as luck would have it a tiny piece of red hot deathstick flew off and landed right on the vinyl of the door. It burned a tiny little mark into it, nothing noticeable really & actually looks like a natural leather flaw... if the door panels were really leather
, but I can see it and know it's there. The inside of my X is literally in factory-new condition even though it's a 2005. I'm a freak about keeping my cars spotless and just knowing there was a tiny flaw drove me crazy.Long story short... I called all over town trying to find a shop that could fix it and came up with squat. All I could find was a brand new WHOLE door panel, which was just simply more cost than a microscopic burn mark was worth. I was told by almost every auto upholstery shop that it is extremely difficult to repair the seats, headliner or vinyl surfaces on our X5's and have the job come out looking factory new. They pretty much all told me the entire piece in question would have to be replaced. ![]() My advise is the same as dpgx5's... ask whoever caused the damage pay for it. I would ask the same thing of any friend who caused damage to a piece of my property that I value greatly. If they have any respect for you as a friend they wont make a fuss about it. Had I burned a tiny little mark into someone else's X5 my checkbook would have come out immediately to correct the situation. Be it $5 or $500, what's right is right.

Make them pay for it and then have him fined for littering because you know damn good and well he (she) flicked that cigarette butt out the window when they were done with it!!!
I have never understood what makes these people (smokers) think that they get a pass on throwing their trash out on the street...sorry, just a sore subject for me.

Get a quote for the repairs (in writing) and then call your friend and say, "Hey those cigarrette burns are going to cost $xxx to repair, can you please help me out?".
I am also paranoid about my interior and do not allow eating, drinking or smoking in my good cars. Though I have relaxed a bit whilst my wife is pregnant, but do my best to keep it restricted to water.

Lets not make generalizations, not all smokers are disrespectful of the environment just because they smoke cigarettes.

Some drunk once put out her cigarette in the cupholder, mistaking it for an ashtray (!). Created a huge fireworks display that burned holes in the carpet.
This was in my truck, not the X. And before I banned it entirely. Kind of reminded me of the old days of sparking seeds, once at a light next to a police car... I did meet a very talented girl who went around to dealer lots to fix upholstery problems. You might call the dealers to see who they use. Can't hurt to try. |
