01 X5 Tow Hitch Wiring Harness

Guys, I know this has probably been spoken about before but in the search results i found i couldnt really get an accurate answer.

I have an 01 X5 and its booked in to get a hitch installed on Wednesday. The price originally qouted was $770Aud but i just got a call back to say that it needs a BMW wiring harness that will cost another $750 on top of the original quote. Is this my only option? Does $750 seem expensive?

Appricate the advice.

Cheers,

I don't know AUD prices, but I can give you the US/CDN versions. When I bought my hitch, there were two part numbers. One was for the hitch with no wiring harness, the other was the hitch including the wiring harness. I paid something like $700 CDN for the hitch and wiring harness together. Other posters in the US have mentioned prices like $450 USD for the hitch and wiring harness. These prices are both without the install labour. (I did mine myself). Dealer prices for parts and labour typically range up to $1100-$1400 US, which is why many of us did the work ourselves.

The install labour is mainly for the bumper removal/reinstall. If you are doing the hitch, and have the bumper off, the additional labour for the wiring is about 30 minutes (and that is generous).

ECS (a site sponsor) list the wiring harness on their site. You could check that out.

Sounds to me like your installer is taking you for a bit of a ride.

Thanks for all the info. I've sent ECS a PM so hopefully he'll be able to help me out.

Towbar costs

Tags,

I have a 05 X5 Diesel and had a Bar fitted by Hayman Reese last year, Bar was under $700.00 fitted. I asked them about the electrical connection and they do ther own and it was $150.00 for the X5. It all works great. Have a look at their Website and give your local supplier a call, you should be pleasantly surprised.

Does the Hayman Reese electrical connection include the BMW module that is designed to run the trailer lighting circuit? It also turns off the rear PDC when a trailer is connected, and so on. Worth having. If they have built their wiring harness around that module, it would be a reasonable solution.

Towbar harness

The module I have from Haman Reese handles all the trailer connectors and light management (with no errors), but does not disable the rear PDC. I didn't ask about that at the time, but when I run the trailer/s I just switch the PDC off, no big deal.

Cheers,

DOUG

Guys,

I've managed to find a few places that do the Haymen Reece wiring module but none of them provide warranty on the wiring if they use the Haymen Reece style wiring harness. Were you given warranty on yours, Doug?

Towbar wiring

The question of not warranted was never raised, they have over the years (this is my fourth towbar frpm them) done a good job and I've never had any issues. For me it was tested before I took delivery, it all works and the price was right...
