Dealer Says: "Amp is blown, need a new one" - urgent advice needed ..
This would explain why audio was failing to come on when the power switch is pushed I guess. My question, is this a 'disaster' in terms of the cost, or an 'opportunity' that I now have an excuse to upgrade to something a bit beefier? |

To me the factory sound system and navigation leaves much to be desired of course the beast is 8 years old. I can't wait till mine goes so I can upgrade without the guilt... mine will never go bad I am sure.
![]() I think you are looking at about 1200 to 1800 to replace the whole system. If you can just replace the amp then about 550 to 900. Edit: go over to the Electronics board here. they are atlking about all this. someone just posted you can get one for %50 on ebay worth a look.

I bought my amp from someone on the forums for cheap and was able to swap out the amp with no issues. Do you know the part number of the amp or at least if its a dsp or non-dsp amp? I received a PM from someone yesterday who has another amp (the same as mine) available for sale.

Would be great if I lived in the US, but I am in E. Europe.
Buying from the US is v. expensive for shipping, with the added issues of import duties and taxes (about 50% of the sale price). In addition, all EU electronics must carry the EC accreditation sticker - even for BMW. If it doesn't, it would be returned at customs or destroyed, so I tend to look for stuff inside the EU. I don't have enough time to wait, as the car has some other things needing dealer attention (brake piston, pdc sensors), so I have just gone ahead and ordered the factory replacement. Thanks for the replies anyway. |

Do you have salvage yards there (where they take the crashed cars)? Get a used one out of a salvage X5 instead of a new one.
Did the dealer tell you why it is blown (wiring issue or just bad luck)? Best scenario is to go with an aftermarket amp and speakers, but I don't know what they sell for in your country. Here in the USA they are pretty reasonable for great sound. You'll need a line out converter to convert the signals from the head unit to the amp into coaxial (RCA) cables, but you can use the existing BMW speaker wiring so it is not a complex install. Good luck!
