Light Coolant Smell on X5 but noticed it on a 2009 328i loaner too...

Hi all,
After driving (longer drives, not short ones) my '01 X5 3.0i i notice a light smell of coolant. Before i bought the x5 in 7/08 the dealer replaced the h20 pump, belt, and fan (went out on the lot in ~12/07).

I check the coolant level ever week or 2 (i know, check my fluids all the time...lol) and has been full and have not lost any coolant in about a yr.

I took my x5 into the dealer back in 12/08 for service and got a 2009 328i (fun ride) for a loaner and noticed the same light coolant smell after i was driving it. Then i have noticed it on other Bimmers too. Is this a common smell from the v6 engines?

No leaks, no coolant loss over a year (just had to top it off, the dealer did not fill it all the way after replacing the pump).

Mine does too - shop noticed some coolant residue on the front of the engine, but not sure if that was from before I had my water pump replaced.

odd! Before i bought the x5 (i got sooo lucky!) in June of 08 the pump went out on the dealers lot (while selling it) and they had to replace the belt and fan (must have stopped and made the belt pop off). I got the records which had it stated on it, the dealer had to get it appoved from the manger.

The odd thing is that i smelled it on a 2009 328i (with 5000 miles) and other bimmers when i walk by them at the park in ride/at the dealer... Most of them are the v6 models too. I would be more concerned if i had coolant loss...

Maybe they (dealer) did not clean off all the coolant when the did the h20 pump? I know it goes every where (try changing the coolant on a Range Rover Classic)! It only smells after a 20 min or more drive when she is warmed up. The coolant temp gauge is right in the middle too and have noticed it since '08...

I6, not V6. I don't think BMW has EVER made a V6 at all.

I've noticed the same smell on my X also, but it's topped up and doesn't have any issues, so who knows. Maybe it's just air escaping from the expansion tank putting off the smell.
