to paddle shift or not

Ok..I drove a m3 with paddle shifters today. Is this something I need to get for the X5. I saw an article where someone added them to there X5. Its an expensive mod...but it would be real cool...

whatcha think???

Yes it'll definitely be cool and functional. In our next meet I'll surely have mine on since I won't be needing the heated steering wheel when it happens...

Rob_ said you did it on your last X5. Did you build the kit your self or did you buy the one from bmw paddleshift.com. I think I am going to go ahead and do. Rob will probably help me install it.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Philip

Phillip,

I got the kit from paddleshift.com since at that time(2001) it was fairly new...

That's whats keeping me from adding the paddles.

Definitely do it, I did the retrofit on my E46 Steptronic and it completely transforms the driving experience!

I have the paddle shift since Jan 03 and it certainly draws a lot of attention . As for its use I think it's mostly cosmetic as it's not really like the SMG paddle shift. The Steptronic integration will of course not allow you downshifts any different to the normal manual mode on your Steptronic. With the Dinan transmission software it becomes a little bit more fun to use the paddle shift as shift points are changing.

Overall it's a nice but expensive mod (the SMG steering wheel will run you appr 450USD new).

If you are interested in a SMG steering wheel which is appr 18 months old let me know. I just replaced mine as part of the AirClick project and I just like the feel and smell of new leather . The "old" steering wheel is in very good condition without any imperfections or damage. You can also choose between a black or the OEM colored lower cover. Photos on request
